Ten unfulfilling years of marriage and seven painful years of divorce weren’t the last chapter for Jeff and Cheryl Scruggs. Their story had an unexpected ending. As God can and often does, He not only healed their marriage, but He made it a powerful example of “beauty from ashes” that is being used to inspire hope in others.
In their book, I Do Again: How We Found a Second Chance at Our Marriage~and You Can Too, the Scruggs each recount their story. Living as roommates. Lack of emotional fulfillment. Infidelity. All of this and more led to a painful divorce that tore their family apart. But this was not the end.
A spiritual awakening on Cheryl’s part, years later, led to a slow but eventual reconciliation and a second chance at marriage. Today, the Scruggs not only have a strong and fulfilling marriage but also a powerful ministry to couples in crisis.
Their website, www.hopeformarriages.com, shares resources for those who want to save their marriages but don’t know where to start. The Scruggs’ share a bit about their story in the following video…
The Scruggs’ book and other resources are among some of the best available to help instill hope and healing in marriages, and I highly recommend them. Matt Chandler, lead pastor of The Village Church in Highland, TX, has seen the power of the Scruggs’ testimony in his congregation and says their story is “the gospel in action” and “needs to be heard.”
Note: In 2011, the Scruggs faced another family trial when their 23-year-old daughter LoLo was hit by a propeller blade. In Still LoLo: A Spinning Propeller, a Horrific Accident, and a Family’s Journey of Hope, LoLo shares how she and her family once again overcame seemingly insurmountable odds. This story is an equally powerful testimony of God’s ability to restore, heal, and use pain for His glory.
