For a cool, refreshing afternoon drink, why not skip the coffee and try an icy watermelon slush? This refreshing twist on watermelon is surprisingly tasty. Perfect for a hot summer day!




I keep watermelon in the fridge all summer long, as everyone in my family loves it. Last week, I had so much watermelon that I decided to freeze some and try making a watermelon drink. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed it (the recipe makes enough for two), especially since it was a sweltering hot day.

After making this, I learned a quick tip on freezing watermelon. Since it is mostly water, it will freeze rock solid, so it should be frozen watermeloncut into small, manageable pieces before freezing. My pieces were too irregular and too large, and I had difficulty getting them to process (even in a VitaMix). My next melon pieces will be much smaller, more like the size of ice cubes.

This drink is not overly sweet but is basically light and refreshing. If you prefer more sass and sweetness to your drinks, you can add frozen lemonade or limeade concentrate to kick this up a notch. If you make this, please write and let me know how it turns out!

  • frozen watermelon (enough to fill a blender halfway)
  • juice of half a lemon
  • 1-2 TB sugar
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup water


  • Put all ingredients in VitaMix or other strong mixer.
  • Process until smooth, adding water slowly until desired consistency is reached.
  • Pour into glass; serve immediately.
