Remove Tarnish From Jewelry in 5 Minutes (Without Spending A Dime)

Did you know that you can remove tarnish from jewelry in 5 minutes~without spending a dime?

Because I have a sterling silver cross necklace that I wear every day, I was thrilled to learn how to remove tarnish from jewelry in 5 minutes~without spending a dime.

The tarnish removing technique works by causing a chemical reaction (oxidation) that transfers the tarnish from the jewelry to an aluminum pan. I don’t really understand the chemistry behind it; I just know it works! Here are before & after photos of my necklace….

So….if you’ve been wanting to clean your tarnished jewelry but didn’t know how, give yourself a few minutes to try this. Your jewelry will be like new! The easy breezy technique is below.

How to Remove Tarnish From Jewelry

Supplies:

1 pan (I used an aluminum pan)
1 piece of aluminum foil (large enough to go under the jewelry)
baking soda (2-3 TB is plenty; I sprinkled it over the jewelry pretty liberally)
boiling water (enough to completely cover the jewelry)

Technique:

  1. Place the foil in the bottom of the pan.
  2. Place the necklace or jewelry in pan.
  3. Sprinkle baking soda over jewelry.
  4. Pour boiling water to cover the jewelry.
  5. Wait 2-3 minutes for oxidation to occur.
  6. Blot jewelry dry on a towel.

I would love to hear from you in the comments if you try this. Tell us what you cleaned and how it turned out. Send pics if you’d like:-) As always, thanks so much for stopping by. Be blessed, and stay savvy!!!

  2. I love this quick and easy hack! My son’s St. Christopher (athlete) medal got tarnished so much, you couldn’t even read the wording. Now it’s clean as a whistle!

  3. Hi Marylou, I am so happy you were able to use this easy, inexpensive hack!!! I use it when my cross necklace and pearl/silver bangles tarnish. It is awesome!!!!

  4. Omg!!! Thank you so much. I’ve had a necklace, ring and erring set that I was going to take into the jewelers to have the opals taken out because they were so badly tarnished. I haven’t worn them in a good 5 years. I tried cleaning with regular jewelry cleaner and it did nothing. And when sorting through my jewelry today I discovered my favorite opal bracelet was very tarnished as well. They all look brand new!! I’m so excited. Thanks, Marylou
