If you have thin lips, I am sharing 2 ways to achieve fuller lips: injections and a nude lip (created with the perfect makeup products).
Lips thin with age, but thankfully there are 2 ways to achieve fuller lips: injections (which actually make lips fuller) and a nude lip (which creates the illusion of fullness). In this post, I share a bit about both of these methods.
Lip injections use fillers (i.e. Restylane, Juvederm) to add fullness to lips. This is the quickest and easiest method for those who want actual fulness put into lips but who don’t want the cost or downtime of fat transfer (done by a plastic surgeon).
A few years ago, I began doing lip injections and have had a wonderful experience, which I am happy to share. Lip injections can look great or they can look fake and disproportionate. The choice of injector is the #1 most important thing to consider. Choose someone whose work you have seen and whose results look natural, and you will be in good hands.
Who I use: My friend and dermatologist, Dr. Jo Herzog, inject my lips once or twice a year. She has a knack for making her patients’ lips look natural because she is a conservative injector.
What I use: For my lip injections, I get the best look with one syringe of Restylane Refyne. Refyne is a bit softer than some of the other lip fillers and is my favorite so far.
Downtime: For me, I avoid going out 2 days after because of the swelling. I keep mild bruises for about a week, but I just use concealer and go about my business. But I always do lips weeks apart from any important event just to be safe.
Pain factor: Lip injections hurt. They bring truth to the “beauty is pain” adage, for sure. Numbing cream, frozen peas, and a vibrator used to massage the face are the methods Dr. Jo uses to make it easier.
Bottom line on lip injections: Done well by a skilled and conservative injector, lip injections can make an amazing difference. Because filler is injected, the lips actually get bigger and fuller. For those who prefer not to go this route, consider the 2nd option……
A Nude Lip to create an Illusion of Fulness
Lipstick and lip products can make a huge difference in the lip arena. Dark lipstick, although dramatic, can minimize lips and make them look smaller. Nude lipsticks, on the other hand, tend to make lips look fuller.
Below, I share my favorite products for creating a nude lip, followed by a video in which I demonstrate how I apply them and the final results. I also link to where to buy the products as well.
My Perfect Nude Lip: Technique and Fave Products
Step 1: Concealer as Base
I use concealer first over most of the lips and under the Cupid’s bow to smooth the lips and provide a neutral palette. My fave concealers are TimeBalm and Tarte.
Step 2: Nude Lip Liner Outside the Lines
I use nude lip liner that is just a smidge darker than the lipstick, and I draw just outside the lip lines to create the illusion of bigger lips. My two fave lip liners are the Sephora brand and are a great look and great price point.
Step 3: Nude lipstick inside the lines
Three of my nude lipstick faves are from Too Faced; one is from Charlotte Tilbury. All of my nude faves have light undertones of pink and/or peach and look really great on fair skin tones.
Step 4: Nude gloss for impact
The final step in the perfect nude lip is lip gloss or liquid lipstick to add shine and make lips pop. The liquid matte lipstick is opaque and can actually be used as a lipstick or a finishing touch after the other lipsticks (I show in my video how this looks). Check it out below:
