The book: Fashioned By Faith by Rachel Lee Carter.
Why I bought it: My girls and I heard Rachel being interviewed over a period of three days on Family Life Today (click here to listen or to download transcripts). Rachel is a wise, witty, engaging woman who has an amazing story. After listening to her, the girls and I had to buy her book! My youngest, Emma, got permission to read it for a book report on “someone famous.” In the process of doing the report, Emma learned wise and biblical concepts of modesty.
Overview: Rachel shares an inside look at her early modeling career (she was on the cover of Teen magazine at age 15) and her early years spent traveling and modeling internationally. As a Christian, she became increasingly uncomfortable with some of the clothing she was asked to model. She made some hard decisions about what type of clothing she would and would not wear, choosing to make choices that stayed true to her convictions.
Now a mom and still model–and someone who loves clothes and fashion– Rachel wants to teach young girls how to be fashionable and stylish without caving in to immodest choices. She talks about the messages that girls send by the clothing they choose. In each chapter, she introduces a different young man who shares his perspective on what goes wear and how it comes across to guys. Most importantly, she points to God’s word as the ultimate guide for how young women should dress to model Christ to others.
Who should read this book: moms, daughters, and anyone who wants to know what modesty is, why it is important, and how it is compatible with being stylish and fashionable–even in today’s culture.
