If you need a little help picking out a good extra virgin olive oil, here are some of the best EVOO’s you can buy (from supermarket to high-end) according to Cooks Illustrated taste tests.
If you are like me, olive oil is a necessary can’t-be-without condiment. My cupboard is never without a bottle, and when I run low, I restock so as not to risk running out.
What are the health benefits of EVOO?
EVOO has many health benefits. It is full of antioxidants, and vitamins E and K. It is also a monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA). The MUFAs in 1-2 tablespoons of olive oil per day can reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, atherosclerosis, and color cancer.
How to get more EVOO into your diet.
- add an extra drizzle to a salad, sandwich, or soup
- use extra virgin olive oil on popcorn
- fry eggs in it; toss veggies in it for roasting
- dress us store-bought hummus with an extra pour of extra virgin olive oil
- replace butter with extra virgin olive oil in baking recipes
Whenever chefs say “good olive oil,” what exactly does this mean? In this post, I’ll share what “good olive oil” is according to Cook’s Illustrated. Additionally, I’ll throw in what is rumored to be the “good olive oil” pick of Ina Garten (aka Barefoot Contessa).
Are all EVOO’s equal?
No, there are many brands but not all meet up to the standards of quality and freshness that would qualify them as a “best pick.”
I often turn to Cook’s Illustrated for their taste test rankings on various foods (as well as kitchen equipment and more). These taste tests are the basis for my “best EVOO” recommendations.
Does good EVOO have to be expensive?
Not at all! In fact, the winning supermarket EVOO, according to Cook’s Illustrated, is good enough to be used not only for cooking, but for drizzling, vinaigrettes, etc….
Which EVOO’s are the best according to Cook’s Illustrated?
I link to the top 2-3 winners in each EVOO category (supermarket, premium and California) below. Note: The California Olive Ranch Everyday Extra Virgin Olive Oil (shown in my photo) has been replaced with California Olive Ranch Destination Series Everyday Extra Virgin Olive Oil and is still the winner for supermarket EVOO.
Which EVOO is the best according to Ina Garten?
Rumor has it that this is Ina’s pick for EVOO and the one she has used exclusively for decades. I link to it in the lineup below, and based on the reviews, it IS a good EVOO.
What EVOO is my favorite?
I use the California Olive Ranch, Colavita, and the Lucini the most. When Costco has the EVOO that is in the tall slender bottle, I buy it as well. I don’t buy the Costco EVOO that is in the fat bottle; it is more for cooking and not good enough for myriad uses IMO.
This post simply shares the “CI picks” for good EVOO’s, and there are certainly others out there that I’d love to know about. Do you have a favorite EVOO that you love? Please tell us about it in the comments below. As always, thanks so much for stopping by. Wishing you a joyful, blessed, and savvy day.
