These bacon wrapped little smokies are sugary, smokey, salty, and pure delish; they won’t last five minutes at a party!
These bacon wrapped little smokies are always the first thing to disappear from the snack table any time I serve party food. They are one of my favorite “savory” appetizers, and folks (especially guys) cannot get enough.
I’ve made these using low fat sausages and regular and will describe the difference below.
Traditional method: The photo above is the traditional method using uncooked bacon to wrap the smokies. The uncooked bacon will release more grease and thus the appetizers will have a more crusty, sugary exterior. I wrap just enough bacon to circle the sausage once then secure it with a toothpick. I think a single circle is plenty and cuts down on the amount of fat per appetizer.
Lower fat method: The photo at right is my attempt at making a healthier, lower fat version of this appetizer. I used turkey sausages along with pre-cooked bacon. The end result was not my personal favorite, as I thought they were too dry. The kids who came to the small group, though, loved them. There wasn’t a piece left:-)
Make Ahead: These can be prepared all the way to the point of baking. Simply wrap sausages, arrange on foil lined tray, and sprinkle with brown sugar. Keep in fridge until ready to cook. These can also be made an hour or so ahead and kept in a warm oven until serving.
You can’t go wrong with this fun and yummy appetizer. It is a perfect food for tailgating or game day viewing. If you try these, let me know how they turn out. As always, thanks so much for stopping by. Be blessed, and stay savvy!
